Don’t you love to see the awesome? We do, and awesome has come in the form of 16 year-old Kavya Kopparapu, who has developed an app, and a 3-D printed device, for the smartphone that can diagnose diabetic retinopathy. How amazing is that!

Typically this eye disease is only diagnosable via a two-hour exam where a special camera takes pictures of the retina. Kopparapu and her team trained and AI system to identify the disease in photos, cutting down the time for a diagnosis. Her motivation was her grandfather who lives in a small city in East India and the challenges of so many patients in the slums with so few ophthalmologists.

Congratulations to Kavya on her accomplishment. The future is bright with many like her at the helm. We’re excited to see what is next in the world of eye health.
