Too Much Eye Makeup Can Be Bad For Your Eyes

Thyroid Eye Disease

As much of a benefit that makeup can be to help you feel and look your best, there are ways that you can use too much makeup or use it incorrectly and impact your eye health.

We're going to take a look what can be problematic for your eyes so that hopefully you don't end up with a problem. Some of the common pitfalls of wearing makeup include:

  • Checking for the makeup expiration date - Most wearers don't know how long you should keep your mascara on for daily, let alone the fact that there is expiration information. Using older mascara can increase the chances for bacteria to spread into your eye.
  • Wash your brushes - Makeup brushes over time will gather bacteria and if you do not clean them regularly, you increase your chance of spreading bacteria to your eyes.
  • Don't apply make up on the move - We get it, some times you're in a rush, but applying make on the move, at the minimum, can increase your chance for a corneal abrasion.
  • Cleaning your face at night - failing to wash off your makeup, especially around your eyes, only increases the chance of bacteria and oil build up with eyelid inflammation.

So, while makeup is your ally, it's important to make sure you use it properly. If you have questions about your makeup practices and it's impact on your eye health, contact our team. We're happy to answer your questions.
