So, you've been diagnosed with glaucoma, what's next? When we talk with glaucoma patients in the Phenix City area, we try to help them understand their diagnosis and what they can do to help themselves.
Here's a small list of tips:
- Know your medications - Make your all your doctors know that you have glaucoma and the medications that you are taking for glaucoma, so that they will not prescribe medicines that will interfere with your glaucoma medicine.
- Medication routine - Make sure that you are taking your medications as prescribed. Managing your routine is critical, so having set times daily to take your meds is a good way to make sure that you don't miss a dose. Alarms are your friend!
- Organization - Knowing what, how much and when you are supposed to take your medicines is important. Write it down, keep it on your cell phone, but make sure you know.
- Stay healthy - Keeping your eyes free of irritants, not rubbing your eyes, protective eye equipment, rest and a healthy diet are ways to help combat glaucoma in addition to medication.
